The most accurate way to determine any bike’s weight is to have your local dealer weigh it for you. Many brands strive to list the lowest possible weight, but in reality weight can vary based on size, finish, hardware and accessories. All Giant bikes are designed for best-in-class weight and ride quality.

Giant Overdrive 2/Overdrive

As the first manufacturer to bring the tapered headtube to market—with the 2006 Glory mountain bike—Giant knows a thing or two about inventing solutions for improved steering precision. The original OverDrive technology resulted in groundbreaking stiffness-to-weight ratios, and the newer OverDrive 2 system on high-performance road and mountain bikes offers even further advantages.

Giant Overdrive 2

Giant’s most advanced fork steerer-tube technology. Oversized headset bearings (1 1/4-inch top and 1 1/2-inch bottom bearings) and a tapered steerer tube combine for unprecedented steering performance with no additional weight.
>1 1/4-inch top bearing
>1 ½-inch bottom bearing
>1 1/4 –inch stem
>Tapered steerer-tube
>Custom OverDrive 2 expansion wedge

Compared to the already stiff OverDrive system, OverDrive 2 provides up to 30 percent more torsional steering stiffness. This translates into industry-leading steering precision. Whether you’re sprinting for the finish or cornering hard in the most demanding conditions, you can ride with more power and confidence.

Giant Overdrive

Giant’s original oversized fork steerer-tube technology. Designed to provide solid front-end steering performance, the system’s oversized headset bearings and tapered steerer tube provide optimal steering stiffness. Road models feature 1 1/8-inch top and 1 1/4-inch bottom bearings, while the mountain version features 1 1/8-inch top and 1 1/2-inch bottom bearings.

OverDrive provides up to 15 percent more torsional steering stiffness than straight steerer-tube designs. This translates into much more accurate steering input from a rider’s hands, through the handlebar and stem, and down to the front wheel. Whether hammering uphill or carving through a corner, OverDrive transmits input directly to the front wheel for more precise handling.

Giant D-Fuse seatpost

The proprietary “D” shaped composite seatpost dampens vibration; resulting in a smooth, compliant ride.

Giant Defy Advanced SL

Four Reasons To Believe.

Pinpoint control

Seamless disc brake integration gives Defy Advanced SL more consistent braking power for better control. Wet weather and rough roads are no longer a factor with the superior confidence and control of disc brake technology. Combined with Defy’s proven endurance geometry and OverDrive 2 steerer tube technology, you get the right balance of speed and control for endurance road riding.

Ultralight weight
Compliance doesn’t have to come with a weight penalty. In fact, the Defy Advanced SL is the lightest road endurance frame that Giant has ever produced (890 grams, size medium with integrated seatpost). With superior engineering and the world’s most advanced composite manufacturing capabilities, Giant has created an endurance road bike with a superior ride quality that doesn’t compromise weight by using mechanical pivots or rubber inserts.

Superior stiffness

Thanks to its OverDrive 2 tapered steerer tube system and massive MegaDrive downtube, Defy Advanced SL achieves best-in-class frame and pedaling stiffness. The result is sharp handling and a confident ride quality so you’re always in control, even on rough roads and long days in the saddle

Engineered compliance

A key characteristic of a successful endurance road bike is the ability to absorb vibrations and impacts from rough road conditions. Compliance is the quantity of vibration that a frameset is able to “soak up.” When riders speak of a particular bike being more compliant than another, they are really referring to its ability to absorb vibrations delivered from the road to their hands and backside. A more compliant frameset results in a smoother ride quality and less fatigue on long rides.

Breakthrough performance

Engineering and world-leading composite manufacturing capabilities give the Defy Advanced SL more effective compliance and a superior ride quality. Mechanical pivots, rubber inserts and other gimmicks aren’t required. Forgoing any extraneous elements allows Giant engineers to deliver on the essential performance factors—control, lighter weight, stiffness and compliance. Why settle for one or two of these factors when you can have all four?

Weight (Total frameset weight)

The 2015 Defy Advanced SL proves significantly lighter than all of its key competitors (besting second place by 229.5 grams).

Stiffness (Frame/Pedalling stiffness)

The 2015 Defy Advanced SL proves to be the overall stiffest - and consequently most efficient - bike in this comparison.

Engineered compliance (Total avarage compliance)

Through superior engineering, the 2015 Defy Advanced SL meets-or-exceeds the compliance characteristics of its competition without the use of external pivots, rubber inserts or other gimmicks.

Unrivaled Composite technology

With more than 25 years of experience in carbon fiber engineering, plus a long history of rigorous development and testing with professional athletes, Giant is the industry leader in composite bicycle technology. To meet the needs of high-performance riders, Giant offers two grades: Advanced SL and Advanced Composite. Both feature unique materials, resin formulas and construction techniques.

Giant Advanced SL Composite technology

Giant's Professional-grade raw carbon material is woven in our own composite factory to create the most cutting-edge frames available today. These frames feature the most advanced engineering and construction methods:
>Professional-grade grade raw carbon with the highest stiffness-to-weight ratio available today.
>Professional-grade formula with Carbon Nanotube Technology (CNT), a microscopic polymer added to Giant's custom blended resin*. Like miniature buttresses, CNT strengthens the layers of composite. Frames featuring CNT are 14 percent more impact-resistant than those without it.
>Fusion process involves hand weaving the toptube and seattube together, then re-molding the area under heat and high pressure to unify the junction, resulting in a lighter, stronger frame than those with traditional molding.
>Continuos fiber technology manufacturing process allows Giant to construct the front triangle of Advanced SL bicycles* with larger, and therefore fewer, sections of composite material. With fewer pieces and junctions, the frames are up to 100 grams lighter and significantly stronger.
